superman returns.......

skipped outta work early yesterday merely to
catch this movie on opening day with my friends.

can honestly say that while i feel that the
movie is of the same calibre of superman
that was issued during (maybe) superman 2...
(meaning, it wasn't THAT bad... if you
put extra points in the graphics column)

i still think this movie would be better
seen as an afterthought.

there are quite a few moral objections that
i choke on.... but i suppose if you don't
care about much and simply want some nice
movie to carry you away for a few... this
would be an ok movie to do it.

i'm certainly displeased with some things
that i really feel obligated to keep quiet
(for now)... so i'll just end with this...

in short... rent it.

I enjoyed it quite a bit (which suprised the fuck outa me! DC tends to screw-up their comic/movie adaptations).

Alright, it wasn't an 'origin', which is usually the best act in a comic-superhero story, but it still held up quite well. The opening shots caught me though. Are they REALLY gonna go through baby-Kal-El crash-landing on the Kent's farm again??? PHEW! Didn't have to endure a post-Reeve post-Smallville re-imagined origin of THAT again!!!

High kudos for actually (FINALLY!) keeping a secret SECRET through all the trailers & previews for the advertising campaign! Double-kudos for NOT taking the easy route and turning that secret into a Cutesy-Cavalry to save Supermans ass when Luthor & Co. were punking him on Kryptonite Island.

Unlike V for Vendetta; which spilled so many beans in their ad campaign, was accused of foul for not using the 'spoiler' tag when talking about the movie (which I still haven't seen). THANKS ad campaign, for saving me paying $10 ticket price for a condensed version of the whole movie in 20-seconds! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Since the disasters of Constantine, The Flash (which I suspect was so bad it got shelved indefinitely by DC. It's been "in Production" for a number of years now), and the nosedive taken after the first Batman (Batman Returns and Batman&Robin were both ridiculous fluff), it seems DC got their shit together. Waited for a solid story/screenplay before producing Batman Begins. Then took a similar "gritty realistic" stance when making Superman Returns.

I can only hope DC doesn't fuck up and cutesyfy the franchise. We don't need a "SuperMr.Mom", just like we didn't need "Superman IV: The Quest For Peace".

"Dr." Laura Slessinger and her radio callers were railing against the 'message' this movie gives to children. CRAP, I was suprised that prude is still on the air! She's gotta realize she's totally irrelevant to anything happening in the world today, right?

i have so much to add that i'm not even sure
where to begin...

i don't really have a problem with the 'child'
shit the movie had going on... nor did i have
an issue with the unwed mother/boyfriend thing...

my major complaint about that was the fact that
any future superman storyline would either have
to incorporate that tidbit... or completely
work around it (either it would have to include
the kid... or pretend it was never really mentioned).

it's funny that you mentioned your fear of seeing
the kid rescue 'dad' in your earlier post...
as i too was just clenched in my seat waiting
for it to happen... which would just create
a loud "OH JEEEZ!" coming from my seat. (and yeah,
i was highly verbal during the movie... and i
don't feel bad about it)

i also agree with you on the production of
superman being somewhat 'hardcore' as opposed
to something completely ridiculous...

HOWEVER... i dunno if it was just me.... but
whenever the story was focused on superman/clark
etc... i had a sense of 'coolness'.... but when
the story switched to lex... it was almost
amusing how lame those segments were (almost
touching on the superman 4 you mentioned earlier).

kevin spacey did an OK job, i guess (and i'm a
HUGE spacey fan).... but i just felt his choice
of 'character feel' was a bit... er... silly.
i just couldn't take it seriously.

even the lex in smallville would have been much
better -- at least he's 'normal' and 'badass'
without having some ZANY idea like spacey carried
through.

i dunno... *shrugs*


it is funny that you mention dr. laura...
i used to be a big fan of her radio show about
6 years ago... mainly because i LOVE listening
to that crap... no matter how lame it is.

Spacey did very well with what he had to work with. In the storyline, there was Superman The Movie, Superman 2, then Superman Returns. Three and Four never happened (thank gawd!). Therefore, Spacey was rather constrained to revisiting the old Gene Hackman version of Lex. He couldn't switch immediately from the bumbling goofball with a Ned Beatty sidekick immediately into 'bad-ass from SE7EN'. He still has a great interest in real estate, seen from the first movie.

The big problem I see with ANY AND ALL comicbook superhero movies is this...

Bad-guys ALWAYS take too large a bite too quickly.

The X-MEN would be fertalizer if Magneto simply worked upon ONE problem at a time. Destroy the X-MEN first, don't just wound them & get them pissy, THEN build that machine to either turn everyone into mutants, or to kill all non-mutants, whichever movie you want. Finish one job before tackling another.

Batman would be dust if any of his foes simply focused a bit. Kill Batman BEFORE robbing a bank & trying to cause anarchy!

Doc Oc, make sure Spiderman is dead by Osbourne's Sons hand first, before lighting up that mini-sun lava-lamp!

Lex, you shoulda used that lathe to grind some Kryptonite bullets, shoot THAT into Superman's eyeball, make sure he's dead, rather than shivving & pushing him over the side of a cliff and hoping for the best. Dumbass.
